Carriers
The Carriers tab allows you to manage a list of carriers that can be reused when creating shipment templates or individual shipments. After creating a carrier, you can add contacts to the carrier so they are readily available to your monitoring team should any shipment issues arise. You can also attach collaborators to carriers, which will ensure key logistics partners at the carrier will automatically receive shipment updates whenever they are managing the load. Using carriers makes the shipment creation and monitoring process faster, more organized, and more effective.
When you first access this page, you will not see any carriers listed, so your first step will be to create one. Once created, all carriers will be visible from this main page for easy access, editing, and adding contacts and collaborators as mentioned above.
Why Use Carriers?
Carriers are a foundational element in the Tive platform that streamlines the logistics process and improves visibility. Here’s why they matter:
- Simplifies Workflow: Avoid repetitive data entry by creating reusable carrier profiles.
- Enhances Communication: Automatically keeps carrier contacts and collaborators in the loop with real-time shipment updates.
- Prevents Errors: Reduces mistakes caused by manually adding carriers every time.
- Unlocks Analytics: Accurate carrier data fuels powerful reporting tools, including:
- Carrier temperature compliance rankings.
- Lane performance comparisons.
- Carrier alert history and reliability insights.
- Faster Resolution: Helps your team quickly identify the right people to contact when shipment issues arise.
Creating a Carrier
You can find carriers under Configure > Carriers
To create a new carrier, click the green Create Carrier button. You will be prompted to enter two key pieces of information:
- The Carrier Name
- The Mode of Transport: Road, Air, Ocean, or Rail
Note: If you select Ocean or Air as the mode, you will have to choose a standardized carrier name. This allows the system to extract tracking data for containers associated with that carrier more accurately. You can find the list of supported Ocean carriers here.
Tip: Be mindful of creating duplicate carriers with slightly different names (i.e. Mikes Trucking vs. Mike’s Trucking). To limit the risk of this happening, only give certain user roles permission to create carriers. Read more about user roles here.
Adding Contacts and Collaborators to Carriers
Once the carrier is created, you can add contacts to the carrier and make those contacts collaborators on any shipments the carrier is added to. This is a scalable tool to make sure key logistics partners are always updated about shipments.
Note: To ensure that contacts and collaborators get added effectively to shipments, make sure that your users have not created duplicate carriers with slightly different names (i.e. Mikes Trucking vs. Mike’s trucking).
Reporting and Analytics on Carriers
In addition to helping with management of shipments while they are in progress, filling out accurate Carrier information will enable you to view metrics on your carriers in Summary and Custom Analytics that can help drive better carrier selection and improve overall outcomes, such as:
- Ranking carriers by temperature compliance
- Ranking carriers by shortest duration on a lane
- Ranking carriers by fewest alerts
Best Practices
To get the most out of Carriers, keep the following best practices in mind:
- Standardize Naming Conventions: Use a clear and consistent naming format for all carriers to avoid duplicates and improve searchability.
- Assign Role-Based Access: Limit carrier creation rights to prevent clutter and inconsistencies.
- Regularly Review Carrier Performance: Use analytics dashboards to assess which carriers meet your standards for performance and compliance.
- Update Contacts Frequently: Make sure contacts and collaborators are kept up to date so the right people receive alerts and updates.
- Use Analytics Proactively: Leverage historical carrier data to inform future decisions and optimize your logistics network.
