Workflow Credits and Usage
How credits work
Most workflow actions are free. A small number are advanced actions, and each one consumes a credit when it runs. Your automation tier determines how many credits you get each month.

Tier |
Credits per month |
What happens when they run out |
|
Starter |
10 |
Workflows keep running in full on shipments already in transit. Workflows that contain an advanced action won't start on shipments beginning after your credits run out. |
|
Scaled |
No monthly limit |
Workflows are not blocked for credit reasons. |
Every organization starts on the Starter tier.
Free actions never consume a credit and are never blocked on any tier.
Which actions use credits
The short version: you use a credit when an automation changes how your tracker behaves, or when it interprets something a person sent you. Sending notifications, updating shipment records, and checking conditions are always free.
Advanced actions - these use credits
|
Action |
What it does |
|
Apply Tracker Configuration Overrides |
Temporarily changes how a tracker reports — for example, its reporting interval, or turning GPS on — for the duration set on the action |
|
Update Tracker Configuration |
Changes a tracker's configuration for the rest of the shipment |
|
Classify Inbound Response |
Uses AI to work out what an incoming email or SMS reply means |
|
Update Alert Resolution Status |
Sets the resolution status on an alert |
Each of these costs one credit each time it runs. A workflow that runs an advanced action twice on the same shipment uses two credits.
Free actions - these never use credits
Notifications — Send Email · Send SMS
Shipment and tracker records — Create Shipment · Update Shipment · Complete Shipment · Add Shipment Comment · Update Shipment Origin · Change Leg Destination · Update Shipment Devices · Undo Device Configuration Changes · Revert Tracker Configuration to previous configuration
Alerts and locations — Attach Alert Presets · Attach Alert Profile for a Bluetooth Device · Create Address from Coordinates
Every trigger and every condition is free. Starting a workflow from a temperature alert, and checking a location, battery level, transport mode, carrier, dwell time or sensor reading, is always free. Only actions can consume credits.
Advanced actions are marked "Uses credits" on the template card and in the template editor, so you can tell before you activate. A template with no "Uses credits" label contains no advanced action and will never consume credits.
What happens when your credits run out
Shipments already in transit keep full coverage
If a shipment had already started when your credits ran out, every workflow on it continues to run in full — all steps, all actions, no restrictions — for the rest of that shipment. Nothing is cut off mid-journey.
Shipments that start afterwards don't run advanced workflows
For a shipment whose start date falls after your credits ran out, workflows that contain an advanced action won't start on it. Workflows built only from free actions are unaffected and keep running normally.
This is based on the shipment's start date, not the date it was created. An upcoming shipment created last week that starts tomorrow counts as a new shipment.
Where you'll see it
- On the Automations page and the shipment list, a banner appears once you reach 100% of your credits, confirming that shipments already in transit keep running and telling you when your credits reset. Note that you must be have the ‘Admin’ role assigned to your account to view credit usage.
- On the Create Shipment page, a banner tells you before you create the shipment that workflows with advanced actions won't run on it.
- In the usage panel, your remaining balance and reset date.
Getting coverage back
Full coverage resumes for all shipments from the moment either of these happens:
- your credits reset at the start of the next month, or
- your organization moves to the Scaled tier.
Workflows do not run retroactively. A workflow that was blocked from starting on a shipment stays blocked for that shipment. Restoring credits resumes coverage going forward, it doesn't reprocess events from the blocked window.
To keep workflows running on every shipment, contact your Account Manager about the Scaled tier.
Your balance period
Credits reset on the 1st of each month (UTC) and run to the end of the month. If your tier changes mid-month, your current balance closes and a new one starts immediately under the new tier, lasting until the end of the month. Usage shown in the UI refreshes every few minutes, so there may be a short delay.

Seeing your usage
On the Automations homepage, a badge in the top-right shows your current tier and usage (for example, "3 / 10 credits used"). Clicking it opens a panel with credits used, credits remaining, your tier, and the current balance period.
You need the Admin role to view credit usage. The banners described above are shown to everyone, so if you see a banner but no usage badge, ask your administrator for the balance.
How credits are counted
If your organization has a single account, your monthly credits belong to that account.
If your organization has multiple accounts, the usage badge shows the credits that apply to the account you're currently in. Switch accounts to see another account's balance.
