Target specific shipments

What this is

By default, a workflow runs on every shipment in your account. Targeting lets you narrow that so a workflow only runs on the shipments you choose, based on where they're going, where they came from, or how they're shipped.

This removes an all-or-nothing choice. Without targeting, you either automate every shipment or none. With it, you can apply a workflow to just one lane, one origin, or one mode which also makes it safe to test a workflow on a small set of shipments before rolling it out widely.

How it works

Targeting is part of the workflow itself. When you add filters, the workflow only starts for shipments that match. It doesn't start on every shipment and then stop. That keeps your shipment activity clean.

If you don't add any filters, the workflow runs on all shipments, as it always has.

Setting up targeting

On the workflow's trigger, select Add filters to target specific shipments. This opens the targeting panel, where you can set any of:

Filter

What it matches

Origin ("Ship From")

Shipments starting from the locations you select. If multiple origins are selected, the workflow will target all shipments with any of the Origin addresses or locations selected.

Destination ("Ship To")

Shipments going to the locations you select. If multiple destinations are selected, the workflow will target all shipments with any of the Destination addresses or locations selected.

Shipment Mode

Shipments on the modes you select (Road, Ocean, Air)

Commodity

Matches if the shipment has at least one commodity matching one of the configured commodities. If multiple commodities are selected, this will target all shipments that contain any of the commodities picked.

Carrier

Matches if the shipment has any of the carriers selected added under ‘Carriers’.

For each filter, you pick one or more values from a searchable list. Your own saved locations appear first; Tive-provided locations appear at the end.

How filters combine

A shipment must match all the filters you've set for the workflow to run on it. Filters narrow together, they don't widen.

For example, Origin = Boston and Mode = Road → the workflow runs only on road shipments leaving Boston. Within a single filter, selecting multiple values matches any of them (Origin = Boston or Chicago). So: any of the values within a filter, but all filters must be satisfied.

Seeing what's targeted

When targeting is set, the workflow's trigger shows a summary: "Only for specific shipments matching all of these," followed by each active filter and its setting (e.g. Origin: 3 locations, Mode: Road). Click any filter to jump back to its settings. When no targeting is set, you'll see the option to add it.
